Honest Abe may help raise the popularity of the $1 coin, when the U.S. Mint unveils one with his image next month.
The new $1 coin bearing the image of Abraham Lincoln, the nation's 16th president (1861-1865), will be launched Nov. 19 at President Lincoln's Cottage on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C. It is the 16th release in the U.S. Mint's Presidential $1 Coin Program.
While $1 coins over the years have been met with only lukewarm enthusiasm by the spending public, the Mint continues to promote their benefits. Coins are 100 percent recyclable, last for decades and, if widely used, could save the country hundreds of millions of dollars, the Mint says.
The previous presidential $1 coin released, featuring James Buchanan, the 15th president, was released this summer. The Mint has produced $303.5 million in presidential $1 coins this year.
