Second gold Krugerand coin of season found in Salvation Army red kettle

The random kindness of a coin collector - The second Krugerrand was discovered in a Salvation Army kettle — this time at Walmart on Friday evening.

For 14 years, an anonymous donor has dropped the special gold coins into kettles. Is it more than one person? Does he or she have an endless supply of the valuable one-ounce gold coins — worth about $1,400 apiece?

While we don’t know who is giving them, we do know that the donation means toys and food for children and families in need.

Over the next two days, moms and dads will come to the Salvation Army distribution center and choose toys for their children. The Salvation Army’s volunteers and staff have transformed an empty building into “Santa’s toy shop,” where parents can browse over the selection.

“The bikes are lined up against the wall and the tables are set up for boys and girls,” said Sgt. Ann Bennett. “It looks wonderful.”

The dolls, cars and games represent hope to a family in need. Awed by the kindness of strangers, they hold onto hope that next year will be better.
