MYSTERY last night shrouded a gardener’s amazing discovery – a cash box stuffed with thousands of pounds in banknotes.
The householder, thought to be in his 60s, unearthed the mini-safe while digging a flowerbed at his home in Godley Gardens, Shibden, Halifax. In it, to his astonishment, was a fortune. The cash box - believed to be around 14 inches long, five inches deep and 10 inches wide - has now been seized by police so they can investigate the freak find.

Officers say they were called just before 7pm on Tuesday.

They are appealing for anyone who thinks the cash box could be theirs to get in touch.

A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing criminal property. He has since been released on bail pending further inquiries.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Police are appealing for anyone who has lost or had a cash box stolen to come forward.

“Anyone who recognises the safe is asked to call Calderdale CID on 0845 6060606.”
