US Mint Launches James A. Garfield Presidential Dollar

On November 17, 2011, the United States Mint officially launched the James Garfield Presidential Dollar. This coin represents the twentieth release for the program honoring the former Presidents of the United States.

A launch ceremony for the coin was held at the James A. Garfield National Historic Site, located at the President’s former home in Mentor, Ohio. In attendance were Marc Landry, United States Mint Acting Associate Director of Manufacturing; Rudolph Garfield, the great-grandson of President Garfield; and Dr. Allan Peskin, professor emeritus of history at the Cleveland State University and author Garfield: A Biography.

Marc Landry said, “The Presidential $1 Coin series connects Americans to inspiring life stories like President Garfield’s. He was the last President born in a log cabin, fatherless by the age of two, drove canal boat teams to earn money for college, became a classics professor and college president, rose to brigadier general in the Civil War, and enjoyed a long, distinguished career in the U.S. Congress.”
The ceremony was open to the public and followed by a coin exchange. Attendees were able to swap paper currency for rolls of the new James Garfield Presidential Dollars.

The obverse design of the coin includes a portrait of the President designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. The inscriptions include “James Garfield”, “In God We Trust”, “20th President”, and “1881″. The reverse of the coin is designed and sculpted by Don Everhart and features a rendition of the Statue of Liberty with inscriptions “United States of America” and “$1″. The date, mint mark, and “E Pluribus Unum” appear on the edge of the coin.

At 12:00 Noon ET on November 17, the James Garfield Dollars were made available by the United States Mint in numismatic rolls. The 25-coin rolls contain coins from either the Philadelphia or Denver Mint. The wrappers indicate the President’s name, mint or origin, and face value. Each roll is priced at $39.95 and can be purchased online at http://catalog.usmint.gov/
