Charles Dickens’ birthday commemorated with special Royal Mint coin

THE Royal Mint is to release a commemorative £2 coin to celebrate the 200th birthday of Portsmouth’s Charles Dickens.

The specially-commissioned coin, pictured, to be released next spring, features a profile of the author made up of titles of his most famous works.

The son of a Navy clerk, Dickens was born in Landport, Portsmouth, on February 7, 1812. Although his family soon moved north, Dickens returned to the city several times, on one occasion to carry out research for his novel Nicholas Nickleby. His birthplace on Old Commercial Road is now a museum.

Artist Matthew Dent designed the new coin. He said: ‘I wanted the design of the coin to reference both the immense contribution Dickens has made to British literature and his iconic portrait.’

A souvenir coin will also be released, priced at £8.50 and available at royalmint.com
